LANSING, MI — The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency says its Veteran-Friendly Schools (VFS) program has enrolled a record-breaking 73 universities, colleges, trade schools and apprenticeship programs for the 2026-2027 academic year, according to a press release.
In addition, all VFS institutions from the 2025-2026 academic year have re-applied, resulting in a 100% retention rate.
“The VFS program’s record growth and record 100% retention rate highlights the incredible value the VFS program creates for our state’s veterans, our academic partners and the MVAA,” said MVAA education analyst Joe Saur. “It also shows these institutions are committed to supporting veterans, service members and military-connected students, and that level of commitment is what makes this program successful.”
The VFS program awards Gold, Silver or Bronze-level status to colleges, universities and training facilities that demonstrate exceptional dedication to meeting the unique needs of the veteran community. Participants in the VFS program are also committed to improving the experience of military-connected students in the academic setting.
According to the press release, VFS recognition is based on a range of veteran-focused services, including dedicated resource centers, academic advising, peer-to-peer mentoring and career readiness initiatives.
