KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Despite a boil water advisory for large portions of the city, Kalamazoo Public Schools will remain open for normal operations Monday.
In an email to district families Sunday, KPS officials said “because the health and safety of our students and staff are our highest priority, we are taking immediate precautions to ensure a safe learning environment.”
All standard drinking fountains and water refill stations connected to municipal water lines will be turned off and covered until the advisory is officially lifted by the city.
The district says they are bringing in bottled water for all students and staff throughout the day.
They say the district’s Food Service team will follow strict safety guidelines. That includes adjusting the menu, if necessary, on certain items or prepping food out of the District Kitchen and sending out to schools since the District Kitchen is not one of the buildings impacted.
The Boil Water Advisory does not include the following KPS buildings: Indian Prairie, King-Westwood, Northeastern, Prairie Ridge, Spring Valley, Hillside, Linden Grove, Kalamazoo Central, District Kitchen and Transportation.
The City of Kalamazoo issued the boil water advisory over the weekend following water testing that detected E.coli.
According to the City of Kalamazoo’s webpage Sunday, “samples analyzed this morning showed no detections of E. coli and no detections of coliform group bacteria. If all samples analyzed Monday morning also show no detections of E. coli or coliform bacteria, the City expects to lift the advisory on Monday, September 21.”
