KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A man convicted of shooting and wounding a Kalamazoo Township policeman in 2025 has been sentenced to at least 47 years in prison.
Kalamazoo County Circuit Court Judge Pamela Lightvoet Friday morning sentenced 25-year-old Kenyun Robert Smith to 45 to 70 years in prison for assault with intent to murder, in addition to two years on a felony firearms charge.
Township police officer Evan Finch was shot March 25, 2025 while officers were responding to a domestic violence and felony assault call at around 11:00 a.m. that morning on North Kendall Avenue. As officers chased Smith, police say he turned around and shot Finch. Another officer from Western Michigan University returned fire and hit Smith.
Over 20 law enforcement officers were in the courtroom Friday for the sentencing.
