KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The next step has been taken to enact a moratorium on data centers and other high-tech facilities in Kalamazoo.
The planning commission has agreed with the Kalamazoo city commission to not accept any new applications for permits for such facilities for up to a year.
City commissioner Chris Praedel says the vote was unanimous and came with an additional recommendation on how to study the issue.
Clerk Scott Borling says the city’s Environmental Concerns Committee has also suggested they hand the next phase over to a task force.
The language would put a hold on any new permits for data centers, cryptocurrency mining operations, or battery storage facilities until city zoning permits are updated to regulate such new complexes to protect community interests.

95 years ago we had a great depression, Michigan had it hard, but not as hard as other states because we had the Automotive Industry. If we ever have another great depression the state of Michigan is going to be in big trouble, because we have lost so much manufacturing, Data Centers are Business Tax to cities and people. States like Florida, Texas and other southern states will be fine, because they are growing.
Don’t expect the local, state and federal government to hand out a bunch of free stuff when the economy collapses, you will be selling Apples like they did in New York, during the last economic crash. You worried about your property value now, wait until your, 600000 home is now worth 25000.
