KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Western Michigan University head football coach Lance Taylor has been named the Paul “Bear” Bryant national coach of the week despite the Broncos losing 13-to-12 to the University of Michigan.
Taylor is 45 and led the Broncos to the Mid-American Conference championship and a bowl win last year.
WMU had a 12-to-7 lead and Broncos thought they had upset the Wolverines until referees said 0.4 seconds remained after a Hail Mary pass in the end zone was broken up.
Michigan scored on the next play to win the game.
The Mid-American Conference had appealed the game.
The NCAA says its rules don’t have a protocol for overturning a game and the rule book says “no rule decision may be changed after the ball is next legally snapped, legally free-kicked or the second or fourth periods have ended.”
