HOMEWOOD, IL (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 8, 2026) – A non-profit that tracks water deaths, along with advocating for improved public safety and awareness about the dangers the waters of the Great Lakes presents, is in trouble.
The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project disclosed on social media over the holiday weekend that it would be ceasing operations unless $10,000 is raised. It would admittedly be a short-term solution, with efforts to find consistent funding through community events, sponsorships, or foundations also sought.
The Chicagoland-based non-profit began 16 years ago when co-founder Dave Benjamin survived a near-fatal drowning while surfing on Lake Michigan, and joined with retired firefighter Bob Pratt to form the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project.
