KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County could soon begin providing haircuts to indigent jail inmates, those who have no money, who are facing court hearings.
Deputy Administrator Terrell Cole says it comes at the request of their court-appointed attorneys at Kalamazoo County Defender, Incorporated.
“KCDI’s goal is to ensure equitable access to services for all individuals regardless of hair texture and grooming needs,” says Cole.
A memo states that they would need to cover the cost of about 17 haircuts a month at a cost of about $65 per trim.
That would add up to approximately $13,260 per year.
“Should the board approve the necessary budget transfer, the sheriff’s office and KCDI anticipate launching the program by the end of July.”
Commissioners will be asked to establish a pilot program that would run through the end of this year at Tuesday’s meeting.
