BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Battle Creek mother wants city leaders to investigate the detainment of her 16-year-old son by police.
Martricia Spearman says Jeremiah was racially profiled and treated unjustly when Battle Creek police detained him Sunday for the second time in two weeks.
Spearman says he was walking along Hubbard Street Sunday afternoon, wasn’t doing anything wrong, and didn’t feel like he had to stop to talk to the officers.
Police Chief Shannon Bagley says officers saw him clutching his pants and believed he had a weapon.
Spearman told police he had a pocket knife when they were patting him down, and Bagley says they will review the concerns that he was racially profiled.
