KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools have snipped the ribbon on their newest facility, their new central kitchen, built at the site of the former Chime Elementary School in Oshtemo Township.
The district provides 6,500 breakfasts, 9,000 lunches, 400 dinners, and afternoon snacks every weekday. They also provide Head Start meals, food for KRESA operations and other organizations.
Superintendent Darrin Slade says having a new state-of-the-art central kitchen will result in more storage capacity, and less waste, and more space for catering.
Voters approved funding for the $8.5 million food facility in 2018, but construction was delayed by the pandemic and supply chain issues.
Dr. Slade says they have now also set the groundbreaking ceremony for the new El Sol Elementary School in Kalamazoo Township for July 7th.
