KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County board has called for a short time-out on plans to build a new Administration Building to assess their priorities, in light of problems at the county jail and other concerns.
The board was asked to hire an outside consultant by county administration, to do a long-range facilities master plan and make recommendations on several building projects the county board has in mind, but vice chair John Taylor thought the board should set those priorities.
Taylor fears they could be facing lawsuits if the jail isn’t addressed, and he says there are other issues the board needs to decide first.
Vice chair pro-tem Jeff Heppler agrees.
Deputy Administrator Terrence Cole says they have a site and a plan to do the administration building, but that’s not the case with the jail.
The issue isn’t whether or not to do the projects, but rather the timing for proceeding with the facility improvements.
Chair Jen Strebs suggested they schedule a special session of the full commission to make some decisions.
The matter will be reviewed again at their next meeting in two weeks.
