KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Kalamazoo jury has convicted 29-year-old James Reed of first-degree premeditated murder in the shooting death in 2018 of 32-year-old Marcus Ford.
Reed was also found guilty of two charges of felony firearm, being a felon in possession of a weapon, and carrying a concealed weapon.
He is scheduled to be sentenced May 27th and is currently serving a prison sentence for a separate case related to assault, weapons, and drug crimes.
Ford was shot and killed just after 1:30 a.m. November 17th, 2018 in the 600 block of Douglas Avenue.
Kalamazoo Public Safety says the case was unsolved for years despite several investigative efforts. Charges against Reed were filed in November of 2024.
“After eight years, yesterday’s verdict highlights the importance of perseverance and a steadfast commitment to the truth,” said Captain Danielle Guilds of the Criminal Investigations Division. “We are grateful to the jury for their careful attention and dedication throughout this process. We also recognize the prosecutor’s diligence and resolve in pursuing justice. Most importantly, we extend our continued support to Marcus Ford’s family, whose strength and trust have endured through years of uncertainty. While this outcome cannot undo their loss, we hope it provides a measure of closure and affirms that their voices have been heard.”
