KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The student body at Western Michigan University has some requests of local city officials, as a long-standing relationship between the city and campus is about to get closer.
The city of Kalamazoo is about to make street changes making downtown more accessible to students, and WMU hockey and basketball teams will be moving to the Kalamazoo Event Center downtown, when it’s completed.
Student government officials addressed the city and county commissions this week.
They had three requests to the city: continue improving pedestrian safety in the Arcadia Neighborhood and near Fraternity Village, expand their ongoing partnership with the city, and join in an aspirational project funded by FFE money to help students.
“There were some ideas that were tossed around like having a lit, paved path from campus to the new arena Event Center downtown featuring student artwork just finding ways that we can fund that,” says Western Student Association president Luke Kritzer, adding closer relations will benefit both the students and the city.
“Graduation is coming up next Saturday in which over 2000 degrees will be handed out to students and we are trying to keep them in Kalamazoo to keep benefiting our community.”
Commissioners expressed an interest in building stronger bonds.
