KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo city crews were out Monday, doing what they can to access the flooding damage from last week’s heavy rains and will be out again today helping pump out flooded basements and yards.
City Manager Malcolm Hankins says they are doing what they can to help out the homeowners who reported flooding issues.
Hankins says there have been problems throughout the community.
Northside resident Maddie Jordan Woods said the influx of city staffers helping homeowners in her neighborhood was a welcome sight.
Hankins says they anticipate the level of the water on the Kalamazoo River will continue to drop through the week. More rain is predicted this week, but in far smaller amounts than last week.
They are urging homeowners to check their basements and keep kids and themselves away from high water and newly formed ponds and puddles.
They have set up a self-reporting link for homeowners that will connect them directly to emergency services, and a crew will stop by to assess the damage and dewater basements if possible.
Friday, after Kalamazoo County and the city of Kalamazoo announced states of emergency, the governor added Kalamazoo to her list of communities on the state’s emergency declaration list.
