PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The city of Portage will celebrate Arbor Day with a ceremonial tree planting at Portage City Hall on Monday at 5 p.m.
The ceremony holds a special significance, as a large, mature maple tree that had been on the City Hall grounds for decades was destroyed in the May 7th, 2024 tornado.
The city will plant a new Red Maple, which is native to Micihgan, in its place and offcials call it a “symbol of renewal, resilience, and the city’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship.”
Members of the city’s Youth Advisory Committee will take part in the ceremony, highlighting the importance of engaging the next generation in caring for our natural resources.
Arbor Day is observed nationwide, and is dedicated to encouraging the planting and care of trees.
Communities across the country mark the occasion with tree plantings, educational events, and volunteer efforts that highlight the vital role trees play in improving air quality, supporting wildlife, reducing stormwater runoff, and enhancing quality of life.n.
