KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – When you dial 911 in Kalamazoo, public safety responds, but sometimes so will a pastor.
The city of Kalamazoo is celebrating the tenth year of its Pastors on Patrol program.
The city commission has approved a proclamation praising the religious leaders, and their founder, Pastor Greg Jennings Sr., for infusing faith & spirit in the department’s efforts and helping to defusing tense situations in the community.
Commissioner Jeanne Hess read the proclamation.
Mayor Dave Anderson says they do regular ride-along patrols but are always available.
Pastor Greg Jennings Jr. says they have just recruited their first female member, Rabbi Simone Schicker.
The crew of clergy have been involved in thousands of ride along patrols and now help administer the city’s gun amnesty program, by providing locations in the community where guns can be dropped off, no questions asked.
