KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A scholarship program has been unveiled by a Kalamazoo Central alum to fill gaps the Kalamazoo Promise doesn’t cover.
Even though the Kalamazoo Promise covers college tuition of Kalamazoo Public Schools graduates who have enrolled in the school district since kindergarten, it doesn’t cover additional costs like housing and textbooks.
Zonterio Weekley, who played football at Western Michigan University after graduating in 2019 at Kalamazoo Central, has created the Weekley Legacy Scholarship Rising Scholar Award. The scholarship is need-based and will be given to 10 graduates in 2026, with two each from Kalamazoo Central High School, Loy Norrix High School, Phoenix High School, the KPS Virtual Program and the Kalamazoo Innovative Learning Program.
Weekley says $7,000 has been raised so far for the scholarship program. Their goal is to distribute $10,000 total, with scholarships ranging from $200 to $1,500, depending on what the funds will be used for.
Scholarship recipients must have participated in a club, sport, after-school activities, community service, or prove they had family responsibilities like child care preventing them from participating.
The application window opens February 5, with the money to be awarded on June.
