KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A huge crowd protesting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement descended on downtown Kalamazoo last night, filling the sidewalks outside Kalamazoo City Hall and Bronson Park.
They were rallying against the deportation operations in Minnesota that have resulted in the shooting deaths of two U.S. citizens this month.
Some of them spoke to the Kalamazoo city commission, saying that everyone is in danger and the city needs to take a stand.
Many wore masks and refused to give their names, fearing they may be singled out, or identified as a domestic terrorist for speaking out.
Commissioner Alonso Wilson called on his colleagues to consider policies to prepare for the day ICE agents show up.
Commissioner Chris Praedel was impressed with the turnout for the rally and their agenda. It made it a special night at City Hall.
The city and Kalamazoo Public Safety has already adopted policies that provide only the support that federal agencies have the legal right to demand, under the law, but right now it seems the law is being abused by federal officials.
Many local officials also fear that taking a stand will only invite ICE intervention.
