KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) -A committee of the Kalamazoo County Democratic Party says in response to increased Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity across the country and events in Minneapolis, they are hosting a public forum next month focused on community safety, civil rights, and preparedness.
The speakers at the event February 3 will include Kalamazoo County Sheriff Rick Fuller, Kalamazoo Vice Mayor Drew Duncan, and Lily Eggeres of the American Civil Liberties Union. It will take place at the Crawlspace Comedy Theatre, 315 West Michigan Avenue, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
The Do Something Committee of the party says event focus on how residents can understand their rights, how local government and law enforcement respond to federal enforcement activity, and how neighbors can support one another during times of uncertainty.
In addition to the panel discussion, organizers say attendees will have access to resources, information tables, and opportunities to take action in support of communities in need. These opportunities may include support for affected communities locally or in other regions, depending on the evolving national situation.
The event is free and open to the public.

I really hope we, here in Kalamazoo are a lot better than people in other cities. We don’t need the rioting and violence that has occurred in other cities. I also hope local law enforcement will cooperate with federal immigration. I’m not against immigration, but there’s a right way and wrong way to do it. If you do it the right way I’ll be the first one to stand up and say, “Welcome to your new home.” Do it the wrong way and my response will be much different. We don’t need foreign gangs or drug traffickers in our home town. We already have enough homegrown problems.
@Jim, this is no longer about immigration. It’s about democracy, public safety, and personal freedom. Don’t kid yourself thinking ICE is just after illegal immigrants and they’re just doing their job.
Ok, I think you’re wrong but let’s say you’re right. What’s your solution? For so many it seems to be burn the whole thing down and build back up from the ashes. That was tried in the ’60’s when I was a teenager with nationwide race riots. It didn’t work then and it’s not going to work now. If you had your way, what would you differently? I really do want to know. Having a dialog can accomplish a lot more than rioting.
