HUDSONVILLE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A massive pileup involving approximately 100 vehicles shut down Interstate 196 in both directions between Hudsonville and Zeeland Monday morning.
The incident began around 10:30 a.m. near 32nd Avenue as heavy lake-effect snow and strong winds created whiteout conditions with near-zero visibility. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police reported that the crash scene stretched for several miles, involving numerous passenger cars and several jackknifed semi-trailers.
Emergency responders reported multiple injuries, though most were preliminary characterized as minor.
To assist stranded motorists, authorities utilized buses from Hudsonville High School and MAX Transit to transport individuals from the freezing conditions to a local warming center at the high school.
With a Winter Storm Warning remaining in effect until Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service and local law enforcement continue to advise against all non-essential travel in West Michigan as crews work to clear the wreckage.
