KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – As part of their Free Martin Luther King Jr. Soul Food Dinner Monday, God’s Kitchen of Michigan will celebrate its 15th anniversary and announce a $15-million capital campaign.
God’s Kitchen officials say the goal is to purchase property, build a commercial kitchen, acquire a small fleet of food trucks, and hire full-time and part-time employees to enhance their free service delivery.
Since opening in 2011, the religious nonprofit says it has served more than 161,000 meals to individuals and families across Southwest Michigan. Formerly God’s Kitchen – Battle Creek, the soup kitchen served its first meal to 86 Cereal City dinner guests October 11, 2011 at First Baptist Church. In 2017, the free dinner service expanded its services to Kalamazoo and changed its name to God’s Kitchen of Michigan.
Mickey Seelye, owner of Seelye Auto Group, will receive the Chairman’s Award in recognition of his support. The dinner will be held from 5:00-6:00 p.m. Monday at the Kanley Memorial Chapel on the campus of Western Michigan University.
