LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says the action taken by the Republican majority on the state House Appropriations Committee to cut $645-million from work projects is unconstitutional.
State House Speaker Matt Hall says he will sue to preserve the funding cuts.
Appropriations Committee chairwoman Ann Bollin says state law gives them the authority to disapprove unspent funds from being transferred to the next fiscal year, but that law is rarely used.
Nessel, however, says a state budget approved and signed by the governor cannot be changed by a single committee vote.
House Minority Leader Ranjeev Puri said the work project funding denials were another losing attempt by the “washed-up Speaker to grab more power.”
Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks also said she was not surprised by the GOP’s “heinous” attempt to “steal money” from the people of Michigan.
