KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo city commissioners have a busy meeting this evening.
First, the city clerk will give the oath of office to their new City Manager, Malcolm Hankins, who will be presiding over his first commission meeting.
Commissioners are also scheduled to give final approval to their 2026 budget, along with a long list of routine and other amendments that have come up since the proposed budget came out over a month ago.
Here is Finance Director Steve Vicenzi.
They will also be approving budgets for the DDA, Brownfield Authority, the EDC, the Northside Cultural And Business Authority, and approving park, Golf, cemetery and building permit and inspection fees.
Commissioners will also consider moving their next meeting to a bigger space. They are expecting an overflow crowd when they take up a controversial rezoning proposal at Stadium and Drake on the 26th.
The last time the issue came up, hundreds of opponents filled City Hall to beyond capacity to object to allowing commercial development that could threaten Asylum Lake.
Commissioner Chris Praedel says whatever venue they pick should make it easier for people to participate, both at the meeting and from home.
City staff have established the costs and capabilities of nearly a dozen spaces, everything from Miller Auditorium to Zion Baptist, from the Radisson Ballroom to several Kalamazoo Public School and Western Michigan University facilities. Some are available, some are not.
