IONIA, MI — VFW Post 12082 and VFW Post 4646 are honored to announce that the fully restored battle flag of the 21st Michigan Regiment of the Civil War will be unveiled to the public on Saturday, November 29 at 1:00 p.m. at the Ionia Theater.
The historic flag hung inside the Ionia County Courthouse for 159 years before being carefully removed in April 2024 for professional restoration in North Carolina. Crafted by the “Ladies of
Ionia” — mothers of the soldiers who served in the 21st Michigan Infantry — the flag has stood as a powerful symbol of sacrifice, courage, and community pride for more than a century and a
half.
“This project has always been about more than restoring a historic relic,” said Eric Calley, Post Commander of Muir/Lyons 4646 . “It’s about preserving the story of those who carried this flag
into battle — honoring their sacrifice and ensuring their legacy continues to inspire future generations.”
The flag’s restoration was made possible through the collaborative efforts of VFW Posts 12082 and 4646, local historians, veterans, and community advocates. Textile conservators specializing in Civil War artifacts stabilized and preserved the fragile fabric to ensure that this piece of Michigan history can be safely displayed for decades to come.
