KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County has contributed $17,200 to add additional secure locker space at Ministry with Community for the Houseless to store their possessions.
Andrea Tramel at Ministry with Community says they already have 150 lockers inside their facility, this will add 33 more.
“We constantly have a waiting list, all of our lockers are full 100% of the time.”
She says this is a pressing need for the homeless and these will fill up fast.
“So this will give 33 individuals in place to store their vital records and their most beloved possessions, we wish it was bigger we just don’t have that space.”
County board chair Jen Strebs says they had hoped to supply larger lockers just outside the facility but could not because it would require the construction of an overhang to protect them from rain and snow.
The money is coming from unallocated COVID-19 dollars.
These lockers are about the size you would see in a typical high school, and once they are ordered, should take six weeks to arrive.
