JACKSON, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Consumers Energy officials say they are ready to help customers who need extra help paying their heating bills this winter.
The utility’s agency partners are accepting applications through the Consumers Affordable Resource for Energy, or CARE, program. That is funded through the Low-Income Energy Assistance Fund, which is a surcharge on retail electric meters.
People who need help can call 211 to get connected to nonprofit organizations to assist with their applications.
To qualify, you need to be a Consumers Energy customer; make no more than 60% of the state’s median income; not have unaddressed fraud, theft, or bankruptcy; and they must be applying for their primary residence. If they are already getting another form of state assistance, they might be automatically eligible.
