KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – One way Kalamazoo County has prevented people from becoming homeless is by helping them avoid foreclosure for non-payment of taxes.
A special session is planned for this week to help those who may be having trouble now.
The county’s new Foreclosure Prevention Specialist, Sarah Shuler, calls it a community resource fair.
“To help our community members with resources that can help them tackle some of those underlying barriers. We’ll have emergency assistance organizations there, employment and training resources, banks available to guide people through potential lending options,” she says.
The first session will be Tuesday at the Northside Association for Community Development from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Shuler says they plan on taking the Kalamazoo County Treasurer’s Office on the road over the next 4 months.
“Oakland Neighborhood Association that’s gonna be November 6th, Comstock Township November 12th, the Richland Community Center November 13th, Northside Association For Community Development November 17th, the Vine Neighborhood Association November 19th, Edison Neighborhood Association December 3rd, South County Community Services December 10th and Portage City Hall on December 11th.”
It takes three years of non-payment for a home to be foreclosed, so there is time to look at all the options and figure out the best way to avoid it.
