KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The civil trial for former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr in the shooting death of Patrick Lyoya is scheduled to begin October 19, 2026.
A federal judge set the trial date which will be held in federal court in Kalamazoo.
The Lyoya family filed the lawsuit, saying Patrick’s Fourth Amendment rights were violated by Schurr using excessive force in the deadly traffic stop in April 2022.
A second-degree murder charge against Schurr was dropped in May when the jury could not reach a verdict after four days of deliberation.
