KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County is considering a plan to dip into opioid settlement money to replace funding that had been approved by the federal government but was cancelled by the Trump administration.
Plans for the 48-unit Kal Recovery Project to house and provide support services for recovering addicts was well underway, when the federal funds were yanked out from under them. A county memo says they only have until August to replace that funding to keep the project on track.
Deputy Administrator Lyndi Smith says building the housing facility is a strategy to save money by reducing pressure to deal with addicts on emergency responders, law enforcement, the county jail and local medical centers.
The details on the switch to the settlement fund, which is money coming from the drug firms and distributors responsible for the opioid crisis, will be presented to the Kalamazoo County commission Tuesday.
