KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Even though the Trump administration has rescinded a memo putting a freeze on government grants after a public outcry, Kalamazoo County officials say they will start preparing now, just in case those funds go away.
County Administrator Kevin Catlin says they rely a lot on federal dollars to fund local services and programs.
He says they are in better shape than most counties financially to withstand cuts, but they were still surprised when the memo was issued by the White House.
County board chair Jen Strebs called to immediately begin strategic planning to identify vulnerable programs and to set priorities just in case cuts occur.
She also wants local residents to do their part to defend our democracy and the constitution by contacting their elected officials to save these programs.
Vice chair John Taylor says he is committed to trying to maintain services.
Kalamazoo County programs may be more at risk because diversity, equity and inclusion statements and programs have been embedded in county policies and contracts with agencies. DEI is one thing President Trump wants purged from any program getting federal funds along with climate change.
