BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – The cause of a Sunday afternoon house fire in the 100 block of East Van Buren Street which claimed the lives of three dogs and three cats remains under investigation by the Battle Creek Fire Department’s Fire Marshal.
Battle Creek firefighters were called to the blaze in the occupied structure at 2:25 p.m..
There were no human injuries or deaths. Damage to the single family residence was estimated at about $190,000.
There were flames coming from a first-floor window when firefighters arrived. They quickly deployed a hose line to begin extinguishing the fire.
Neighbors reported hearing calls for help from inside the home, but no individuals were found by firefighters.
The fire was brought under control within an hour and a half. The Red Cross is providing temporary lodging assistance to the displaced residents.
