KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – It isn’t often that an audit report gets an ovation, but that’s what happened when the Kalamazoo Public Schools board received their latest annual financial report card.
Auditor Jon Ringlein, a senior manager at Maner Costerisan, a Lansing accounting firm, not only described the district budget as sound, but award winning.
It won an award from the Association of School Business Officials for its budget practices, something only one in 17 schools win.
Superintendent Darrin Slade credited financial manager Laura Kayser and her staff for the good job.
Trustees agreed.
All school districts in Michigan are required to undergo annual audits that meet government auditing standards to qualify for state funding.
The report came less than two years after the district terminated their previous financial manager, Jim English, for unauthorized spending and “a pattern of behavior that was inconsistent with good and established business practices.”
