COVERT TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Palisades nuclear power plant in Covert Township has closed on a loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Department of Agriculture for up to $1.52 billion dollars to restart the plant.
The USDA also announced over $1.3 billion in Empowering Rural American program awards to two rural electric cooperatives to cut their costs of receiving electricity from Palisades. Those cooperatives are Wolverine Power Cooperative and Hoosier Energy.
Palisades was shut down in May 2022 and ownership was transferred to Holtec International to decommission the plant.
Holtec later decided to try to restart the plant, which has never been done in the United States.
Palisades would produce nuclear power until at least 2051 subject to U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing approvals.
