KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Pro-Palestinian protests have returned to college campuses as classes have resumed this fall across the nation and at Western Michigan University.
It was standing room only at the first trustees meeting this school year Thursday as students once again demanded the WMU administration make a strong statement calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, and divestment in any firms that help Israel.
Two faculty members, Jacinta Swanson and Don Cooney, pointed out the university issued statements against apartheid in South Africa and against Asian discrimination during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The trustees and the administration did not take any action.
It has been the position of the university that education should be their focus, and while it should encourage free speech, it shouldn’t take positions of its own on divisive issues.
President Edward Montgomery commented at the previous board meeting.
