KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The last school year was a very good one for Kalamazoo Public Schools according to state test scores.
Superintendent Dr. Darrin Slade presented the results to the school board last night.
Elementary, middle school and high school students who took the MSTEP tests showed increased proficiency, sometimes in double digits, in math, reading and social studies. Most of the district numbers showed they were making improvements at a higher rate than the rest of the state’s schools.
Dr. Slade credits improved attendance, Saturday classes, summer school and other new measures.
He says students at Kalamazoo’s historically low performing elementary schools showed some of the biggest improvements, and high schoolers in the district’s Advanced Placement program had the best results in district history.
He says graduation rates won’t be out for a few months, but preliminary numbers show last fall’s numbers were at or near the district’s record high.
Slade says they are still below the state average in proficiency, but they are closer, and plan to fold what these results tell them into a new strategic plan that will set higher expectations and be proposed to the board before Thanksgiving.
All the numbers can be viewed for individual schools at MISchoolData.org.
