PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Portage Public Safety contained a fire to the attic of a home in the 2000 block of Ramona Avenue Monday night.
The first fire engine arrived to see smoke showing and the residents of the home had evacuated safely.
The flames were put out within ten minutes and crews found large areas of smoldering insulation that needed to be extinguished and removed.
It took over an hour and a half to handle that part of the operation as the ceiling and a wall needed to be removed from the bathroom and the kitchen.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation and no one was injured.
A second fire in Portage happened at midnight Tuesday morning at the Valley Family Church on Vincent Avenue, and that fire did a small amount of damage.
Portage Public Safety responded to a smoke alarm and saw nothing from the outside, but an employee told dispatchers he could see the fire inside through the security camera live stream on his phone.
A small fire was found in the workshop area of the church and was put out with a fire extinguisher.
The investigation found the fire was the result of spontaneous combustion of materials as church staff had been working on staining a large number of wooden slats. The materials used were thrown away before they were completely dry, and allowed them to heat to the point of ignition.
