KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety has made an arrest in connection with the fires that occurred on Sherwood Avenue and Humphrey Street August 28, as well as a burglary that took place later that morning.
24-year-old Toby Knight was arrested Thursday following a joint investigation between Fire
Marshal Scott Brooks and the Criminal Investigation Division.
Knight faces several charges, including arson and breaking and entering, as well as theft of approximately $10,000 worth of property and goods.
According to KDPS, the charges against Knight are:
1. Arson of a Dwelling (First Degree Arson)
2. Arson of Personal Property (Third Degree Arson)
3. Breaking and Entering with Intent
4. Receiving and Concealing Stolen Property – Motor Vehicle
5. Fleeing and Eluding Police Officer – Third Degree
6. Larceny in a Building
Knight is currently being held on a $200,000 cash/surety bond.
August 28 at approximately 1:36 A.M., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers were dispatched to the 1700 block of Humphrey Street for a report of a house fire. First arriving officers found heavy smoke and flames coming from a vacant home.
The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes.
Just minutes later, at approximately 1:44 A.M., officers were dispatched to another house fire in the 1100 block of Sherwood Avenue. Heavy smoke and fire were observed coming from this vacant home as well. The fire was contained within 45 minutes.
Additionally, approximately $10,000 worth of tools were stolen during a burglary at a business on the 1300 block of King Highway that same morning.
