PORTER TOWNSHIP, MI ( WKZO AM/FM) – A late night rollover crash Friday was one of two fatal weekend accidents in Cass County.
Deputies with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to the first fatal crash on Teasdale Lake Street, west of Robbins Lake Road in Porter Township around 11:30 p.m. Friday.
The initial investigation of the crash showed that a vehicle traveling westbound on Teasdale Lake Street was traveling at a high rate of speed. The driver, 24-year-old James Neal Shaw of Mishawaka, Indiana lost control of the vehicle, flipped the vehicle on its top, and slid down an embankment for approximately 50 yards, hit a tree, and came to rest at the bottom of the embankment.
Shaw was pronounced deceased at the scene. A passenger, 23-year-old Taves Naasz of Elkhart, Indiana, was transported by ambulance to Elkhart General Hospital for injuries.
Naasz was wearing a seat belt and Shaw was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Police say alcohol and drugs are believed to be a contributing factor in this crash.
Sunday at 10:20 a.m. deputies responded to another fatal traffic crash at the intersection of M-60 and Dailey Road in Cass County’s Jefferson Township.
The initial investigation of the crash shows that a vehicle traveling southbound on Dailey Road failed to stop at the stop sign at M-60 and was struck by a second vehicle that was travel northeast on M-60.
The first driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the second vehicle and three passengers were transported by ambulance to South Bend Memorial Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash.
