CALHOUN COUNTY, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – The Calhoun County Public Health Department announced on Friday they are tracking a human case of West Nile Virus in a Calhoun County resident.
According to a news release issued by the department, the patient has a limited travel history, so it is likely they contracted the virus after being bit by a mosquito in Calhoun County.
With the weather expected to stay warm and dry for the next week, many people will be drawn outside.
Calhoun County Public Health Department Health Officer Eric Pessell says it is important to remember that mosquitoes remain active, even later in the season and that everyone should take simple precautions to reduce the risk of being bitten.
The CCPHD recommends wearing a mosquito repellent that contains 10 to 35 percent DEET, wearing light-colored clothing, and staying indoors during dusk.
In rare cases, West Nile Virus can become a serious and sometimes fatal illness.
You can help stop mosquitoes from breeding by removing any standing water in your yard and keeping your lawn and shrubs cut.
