LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 10, 2024) – The state budget for Fiscal 2025 hasn’t even taken effect yet, and some lawmakers want to make changes to the spending plan already.
On Monday, minority House Republicans unveiled what they called a “comprehensive” package of bills aimed at shortfalls on school spending for the year that begins on October 1st. One of the sponsors, first-term GOP Representative Nancy DeBoer of Holland, said that her bill would restore $305 million in school safety and mental health funding.
Another bill, put forward by Jaime Greene of Richmond, northeast of Detroit, would give students in Michigan’s Merit Curriculum program more flexibility in selecting classes for career choices.
It is problematical that this “Pathways to Success” package would clear the Legislature and get to Governor Whitmer’s desk before the end of the year, but Republicans are confident about its chances in 2025 should they regain control of the House in the November 5th General Election.
