KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County plans to take a renewed look at how they spend money on the elderly after voters have reapproved the senior millage last month.
Don Saldia, who oversees the operation of the Area Agency on Aging, says they will be following the lead of other counties and have asked for a new committee to choose who receives the contracts to do the work.
He says one new program they will be giving a try will be to provide gap funding for medical assistance to seniors.
He says, after a year of operation, they will have a better idea of how it should be managed.
The Kalamazoo County board approved the creation of the ad hoc committee, which will review bids collected this month, and provide commissioners with their recommendations before next year’s budget is approved.
Saldia says Portage has the highest utilization rate for their services, partly because they have a Senior Center which exposes residents to information about their programs.
