KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Western Michigan University and the WMU Chapter of the American Association of University Professors are continuing to negotiate a new contract.
WMU deputy spokesperson Paula Davis says they need to reach a deal that can work for both sides.
The union says they are prepared to ask for a strike authorization vote and if they decide to walk off the job, it will be the first strike at the university since 1977.
Professors want an 8.5% pay raise for this year and 8.75% for next year.
WMU is proposing a 3% raise or $2,500 raise, whichever is larger.
Western Michigan University professors have an average salary of $93,820.
