KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A vacant commercial building in downtown Kalamazoo caught fire Tuesday morning.
Kalamazoo Public Safety says the fire was under control by around 6 a.m. and no one was hurt.
The building is on Water Street near Water Street Café and HopCat and has been vacant for several decades.
The city fire marshal says the structure has gaps between renovated areas that allowed the flames to spread easily.
The fire appears to have been started outside of the building.
The owner helped crews by explaining how the structure, which was built in the 1800s, was laid out and that helped them get it under control.
