KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Residents over 50 make up nearly a third of Michigan’s population and residents over 85 are the single fastest growing age group in Kalamazoo and in the state.
Kalamazoo County Health Director Jim Rutherford recently told county commissioners that nearly a third of his total budget goes to senior programs, and the need will grow.
Rutherford says the best way to help the elderly is to keep them healthy and self-sufficient.
This afternoon, county commissioners will be asked to appoint a task force to review bids from agencies to provide services funded by the county’s recently renewed Senior Millage.
Projected services include everything from Meals on Wheels to home improvements to a pilot program for gap health support.
