KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – City officials in Kalamazoo are urging people to stop opening fire hydrants in an attempt to cool off.
They say there has been a large increase in unauthorized hydrant openings and that can cause serious injuries and endanger traffic.
Opening and closing the hydrants improperly can cause pipes underground to burst, which disrupts water service.
The city says they will open several hydrants during extremely hot weather between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
Those are at 11 locations in the city including Hays Park and James; Northway and Princeton; Church and Norway; Fairbanks and Center; the far northwest corner of Interfaith; Krom and Clay, and Sherwood at Roosevelt Apartments.
A water park is open for people to use on Florence Street near Burrell.
