KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – As the new school year begins in Kalamazoo County, Kalamazoo Public Schools superintendent Dr. Darrin Slade has higher expectations and the promise of a little more fun for his students.
He says the numbers for last year show improvement, and he wants to build on that.
Dr. Slade says he also wants to get students out of the classroom occasionally to take advantage of some real-world experiences.
School starts today with a half day in most area districts and will begin full days tomorrow.
One other new feature in the district this year will be the hiring of a full-time truant officer, to further beef up the anti-skipping efforts initiated by the school system last year.
