KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County government may be looking for a new home.
They had hoped to build new administration space in the same building that would house a new courthouse but had to trim back those plans for lack of money. The new Justice Center will be dedicated in two weeks.
In a statement, the county says “the (Administration) building was constructed in the 1970s and thus was designed for a different era. To be equipped to serve the community well into the 21st century, the County needs to adapt to modern technology and evolving needs.”
Commissioner Monteze Morales thinks department heads should have some input on any changes, which she says hasn’t always happened in the past.
Their statement says it’s “just exploratory,” but the board authorized the county administrator to negotiate the purchase of property for county use at their last meeting.
The treasurer and the clerk recently remodeled their facilities in the current administration building on Kalamazoo Avenue.
Now would be a good time to shop for office space, given the surplus that exists after the COVID-19 pandemic.
