KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – An effort to create more shelter space for low-income families in Kalamazoo is moving forward quickly, but that doesn’t mean it will be available soon.
The primary goal is to provide temporary housing for complete families.
County board vice chair John Taylor says existing shelters don’t allow men and women to stay together.
Monday night the city of Kalamazoo allocated $1.2 million from federal COVID-19 funds for the project. The county has reportedly set aside money for the project and talks are underway with Portage to contribute, according to Taylor.
After a closed session last night, the county also authorized the administrator to explore the purchase of possible sites for the facility,
But Taylor says revealing any locations could hurt those discussions…
Taylor says it’s unlikely that a new shelter would be available in time for use this coming winter.
