WHITE PIGEON, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – Michigan State Police from the Marshall post say a shooting Friday afternoon in the parking lot of the McDonald’s restaurant in White Pigeon involving a separated married couple from Sturgis has resulted in the death of the woman while the man who allegedly fired the shots is in critical condition.
State Police say the shooting took place at about 4:30 p.m. as the couple met for their customary child exchange.
Troopers say while the 25-year-old woman was sitting in her vehicle and the 29-year-old man was standing outside, a verbal altercation took place.
At some point the male suspect allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot the female victim multiple times and then subsequently shot himself.
The woman was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital where she later died.
The man was transported to Kalamazoo Bronson Hospital with what were described as life-threatening injuries.
No one else was shot or injured during the incident. According to the State Police, the couple’s children were not present as they were apparently with other family members.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by multiple agencies, including White Pigeon and Constantine Police & Fire units; Three Rivers Police & Ambulance; St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office; Life Care Ambulance, Med Flight and Samaritan Flight. This incident remains open pending further investigation, autopsy results, and lab analysis.
When completed, a copy of the full report will be submitted to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
