PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The city of Portage is working to reverse the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s denial of disaster aid following May’s tornado.
State Senator Sean McCann asked the governor to appeal to FEMA soon after the decision came down.
Portage City Manager Patrick McGinnis says they are seeking information from the victims of the tornado.
He says they will then be able to prepare their arguments for an appeal, through the proper channels.
An appeal would have to be submitted to the Michigan State Police, who would then send it to the governor’s office, and it would be up to them to send the appeal to FEMA.
McGinnis says the response has been good so far.
Apparently they are still compiling the costs of the damage done by the storm. The clean-up is ongoing, there are hundreds of victims and dozens of insurance agencies working through claims.
County officials have been saying for some time that it appeared that the damage done on May 7th would not meet the criteria for federal help, but the final decision still disappointed state and local officials when it came down.
