KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Plans to build a new Residence Inn near the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport will be back before the Kalamazoo city commission tonight. A public hearing is scheduled on the first steps to give the project a 50% tax break.
The Marriott operation would be built at the site of the former Brewsters restaurant and a closed motel near the airport on Portage Street.
Mayor Dave Anderson says it’s a project worth supporting.
Commissioner Chris Preadel says it will mean additional jobs and give an economic boost to the Portage Street corridor.
The hotel will cater to business travelers, providing kitchenettes in the rooms. If they can work out all the financing on the $23-million project, it would open in the spring of 2026.
